COMMITTED TO SMU OVER: Air Force, Army, Columbia, Cornell, Brown, Harvard, Navy, Texas State, Vernon and McNeese State
SIDE NOTE: Barton was originally recruited by SMU offensive coordinator Joe Craddock before he handed over the recruitment to offensive line coach Dustin Fry and defensive line coach Buddy Wyatt.
AUDIBLE: "It means the world to me, I’m excited the relationship I’ve built with these coaches is second to none."

How Barton fits

Barton is a good fit along SMU’s offensive line due to his ability to get out in front and open up holes in the run game. They don’t come much more powerful that Barton who takes pride in finishing blocks and driving defensive backs and linebackers back as far as possible. Barton does need to be careful of being too aggressive in pass protection as he tends to overextend himself but this is certainly correctable.

What Barton brings

Barton brings an aggressive nature and attitude to this offensive line that will serve them well when he is on the field. He is great in the run game just finding anyone he can to block. He should continue to develop in the passing game and when that happens he will be a key piece of SMU’s future offensive lines.

What to Expect Freshman Year

Depending on Barton’s summer and fall camps he is a candidate to redshirt if he still needs some time to develop in pass protection. If he can pick up the pass protection adjustments, he is certainly an option for SMU at right guard early on, which is a position that is wide open for SMU heading into next year. Barton does have a bit of an advantage giving his run blocking prowess and this could open the door for him to see some early playing time next season.

Career Expectations for Barton

As long as Barton can make strides in the passing game, he has all the makings of a guy who could be very good at SMU. He is aggressive and hardworking while possessing the necessary football IQ to pick things up fast both in this offense and what the staff is trying to teach him. Look for Barton to be a key piece heading into his upperclassmen years.
