SENIOR YEAR STATS: 45 Tackles 2 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries, 9 interceptions

AUDIBLE: “I’ve always dreamed of being a division I football player. I’m glad I had my family here, because they know how hard I’ve worked.”

How Onu fits

SMU desperately needed depth on the defensive end. Not just depth, but talent and Onu definitely has that. At 6-0, 180 pounds Onu is a good sized corner, but because of his ball hawking style, SMU is going to be looking at him at the safety position.

What Onu brings

He is incredibly smart and crafty when it comes to creating turnovers—whether it’s stripping the ball or breaking off a receiver to jump in front of a route. He simply has a nose for the football. He won’t be what you would call a big-hitting safety. He is a sure tackler, but he is much more of a coverage safety with a very good range.

What to Expect Freshman Year

At least on paper, Onu stands a good shot at contributing early. I wouldn’t go so far as to say he’d be starting right away, but we’ve already seen that this coaching staff isn’t above using the right freshmen early and often in the season.

Career Expectations for Onu

He has all the necessary skills to be an effective safety. His ability to blanket a receiver in man-to-man coverage coupled with his sharp instincts in zone make him a very complete defensive back. With the way he goes after the football creates turnovers, he could find his name in the SMU record books.
