SENIOR YEAR STATS: 73 catches 1,543 yards 19 Touchdowns
COMMITTED TO SMU OVER: Northwestern, Memphis, and Stanford

AUDIBLE: “I’m relieved that the recruiting process is complete. Now I can focus on what I want to major in and work on improving my football skills.”

How Shelmire fits

SMU runs a similar offense to what Lutheran South Academy does. So Shelmire should be able to pick everything up relatively quickly. Depending on how hard he works in the offseason, he’ll likely get some looks early.

What Shelmire brings

At 6-2, 185 he has good size, good hands and good speed, but what makes him special is his ability to make something happen after the catch. There is something very natural to the way he makes guys miss—either with a stiff arm, a juke, or even just running through a tackle. And once he creates enough space between him and a defender he drops it into another gear and is gone. Three words: yards after catch.

What to Expect Freshman Year

Since he should be able to pick up on the offense quickly and he has a lot of skills to offer, SMU can get creative with how they use him. I’m sure he’ll get a chance to show what he can do on special teams, but he’ll probably be split-out wide now and again too.

Career Expectations for Shelmire

He’s very physical and has really strong top speed. His ability to make defenders miss after the catch could make him a real threat. If you watch his tape, almost every play is him breaking a bubble screen for a touchdown. If he can demonstrate the ability to take any route to the house, he’ll be a featured weapon on the Hilltop.
