Demerick Gary Signing Day Video
COMMITTED TO SMU OVER:Air Force, Navy, Nevada, Arkansas State and others.
AUDIBLE: "It's been a long road. A couple years ago, I didn't think I'd be here. I'm blessed to be here and thankful to be here. I'm just excited for the day and to make it official. It's a great day for me and that's pretty much it."
How Gary Fits
Gary is a versatile defensive lineman that can play end and tackle depending on where his body takes him. SMU is making a habit of signing kids that they feel like can help them at multiple positions and Gary fits the bill by being able to play anywhere along the defensive line.
What Gary Brings
Intensity and quality pass rushing moves. Gary uses his hands extremely well and that allows him to penetrate the backfield and disrupt opposing team's plays. That's the biggest thing he brings is total disruption. When he's around, bad things happen to the other team's play calls.
Expectations for Freshman Year
If the staff decides that Gary is best suited to play inside, he might find himself redshirting just to put on a little more mass and strength, but he's certainly got the talent to play. It's just a matter if it's best for his long-term development to redshirt. Personally, I think he redshirts to get some more weight on him and to be ready to rock his sophomore year.
Career Expectations for Gary
Gary plays angry and that's what jumps out to you on film, which is why I think he'll thrive as a pass rusher at defensive tackle. Gary will certainly be able to defend the run as well, but with his arsenal of pass rushing moves, I think that's where he could thrive in his career. Gary will likely become a starter his sophomore year if he redshirts following the departure of J.T. Williams and others by that point.
