February AAC basketball recruiting recap

Recruiting is quiet now that the early signing period is long gone and high school seasons are still ongoing. Some teams have finished their classes, while others are still looking for a couple more players to sign when the late signing period opens on April 13. One team has an early commitment from a 2017 star big man. Here is where the teams stand in the 2016 cycle.

Connecticut Huskies

Signees: Woodstock Academy (Conn.) three-star power forward Mamadou Diarra; Lithonia (Ga.) Miller Grove four-star point guard Alterique Gilbert (No. 38 overall in top 100); Tampa Preparatory (Fla.) five-star power forward Juwan Durham (No. 27 overall); Napa (Calif.) Prolific Prep four-star wing Vance Jackson (No. 63 overall)

Verbal commitments: 2017 Miami Senior four-star center Zack Brown

Recent activity/Other 2016 targets: Brown, the No. 30 overall player in the 2017 class, picked the Huskies on Jan. 20 over Kentucky, Miami and Virginia. A five-star when he committed, Brown is a 7-footer who weights 230 pounds. UConn appears done in 2016, for now.

Tulsa Golden Hurricane

Signees: Little Rock (Ark.) Pulaski Academy wing Lawson Korita; Blinn College (Texas) wing Corey Henderson Jr.; Marietta (Ga.) Covenant Christian power forward Martins Igbanu; South Kent (Conn.) three-star wing Travis Atson

Verbal commitments: 2016 College of Southern Idaho wing Eugene Artison, 2016 Australian Institute of Sport center Will Magnay.

Recent activity/Other 2016 targets: Artison committed in late December. Originally a Fresno State signee in 2014, the Seattle, Wash. native also held offers from Missouri State and Northern Kentucky. Magnay, a 6-foot-10 center, committed in early January. Tulsa will lose eight seniors after this season, so it still has spots open. JUCO offers Jalen Canty and Jerrelle DeBerry are still uncommitted. DeBerry is a one-time Wisconsin-Green Bay commit.

Central Florida Knights

Signees: University School of Jackson (Tenn.) three-star small forward Clayton Hughes; Columbia City (Ind.) three-star hybrid forward Brachen Hazen; Richmond (Va.) John Marshall combo guard Jeremy Sheppard

Verbal commitments: None

Recent activity/Other 2016 targets: UCF recently offered 2016 MacDuffie (Mass.) three-star center Jordy Tshimanga, who has collected a handful of offers in the late period. Longtime Knights target and four-star Montverde (Fla.) Prep center Bruno Fernando is still available and looks like he will try to play in 2016-17. He did not filed his NCAA Clearninghouse paperwork until recently. He is also getting late interest from Duke, Auburn and Alabama.

South Florida Bulls

Signees: Oldsmar Christian (Fla.) combo forward Troy Baxter; Orlando (Fla.) West Oaks Academy point guard Andres Feliz; Brewster Academy (N.H.) wing Malik Fitts

Verbal commitments: None

Recent activity/Other 2016 targets: USF added Texas Tech transfer Isaiah Manderson, a 6-foot-10, 255-pound center, in December. He will be eligible starting in December 2016. Victory Rock Prep (Fla.) center Khadim Gueye took a fall official visit to South Florida and is still uncommitted.

Temple Owls

Signees: Rochester (N.Y.) Bishop Kearney four-star combo guard Quinton Rose; Hyattsville (Md.) Friendship Academy three-star point guard Alani Moore; Jackson (Miss.) Callaway C Damion Moore

Verbal commitments: None

Recent activity/Other 2016 targets: The Owls still have space left in the class and have a few targets left. Australian wing Jack White visited in December, but Duke will bring him in for an official at the end of February. Danish forward Marinus Mouboe drew a lot of attention from Temple over the summer and is still available. One player came off the board: Cardinal Hayes (N.Y.) guard Clive Allen, who held a Temple offer, committed to Robert Morris on Feb. 5.

Tulane Green Wave

Signees: Reno (Nev.) International Prep power forward Maxwell Starwood; Reedley (Calif.) Immanuel three-star point guard Colin Slater; San Diego Mission Bay three-star point guard Justin Moore

Verbal commitments: None

Recent activity/Other 2016 targets: Tulane is out of spots unless someone transfers.

SMU Mustangs

Signees: Oklahoma City Southeast three-star point guard DaShawn McDowell; Australian Institute of Sport point guard Tom Wilson

Verbal commitments: 2016 Australian Institute of Sport four-star power forward Harry Froling.

Recent activity/Other 2016 targets: Froling committed on Jan. 25, picking SMU over offers from Arizona, Colorado and Illinois. SMU is still looking for another big man to finish the class. Huntington Prep (W.V.) forward Ted Kapita, originally a top-50 player in the 2015 class, has visited and has SMU high on his list. Montverde Prep (Fla.) center Bruno Fernando is also still on SMU’s radar.

Cincinnati Bearcats

Signees: Burlington (N.J.) Life Center Academy three-star power forward Nysier Brooks; Wilmington (Ohio) four-star wing Jarron Cumberland (No. 77 overall)

Verbal commitments: None

Recent activity/Other 2016 targets: The Bearcats have three spots left as of right now. They offered uncommitted Chattanooga State C.C. (Tenn.) forward Devlyn Williams in September. Cincinnati offered Hargrave Military Academy (Va.) center Iran Bennett in 2014, and he has yet to commit. Manhassett (N.Y.) St. Mary’s point guard Devonte Green, who had a Cincinnati offer, committed to Indiana in January. Cincinnati may not fill the spots it wants until the summer.

Memphis Tigers

Signees: Southwest Tennessee C.C. forward Jimario Rivers; Chicago Morgan Park Academy four-star point guard Charlie Moore (No. 65 overall)

Verbal commitments: None

Recent activity/Other 2016 targets: Memphis is out of space right now, unless someone transfers. Given the pressure building on head coach Josh Pastner, Memphis roster could see another overhaul this offseason.

Houston Cougars

Signees: Round Rock (Texas) McNeil shooting guard Armoni Brooks; Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa C.C. center Valentine Sangoyomi

Verbal commitments: None

Recent activity/Other 2016 targets: The Cougars are still considered a major player with St. Stephens Episcopal (Texas) five-star center Jarrett Allen, although he has visited Texas multiple times this season. Houston also offered North Idaho College guard Braian Angola-Rodas, who was named the national junior college player of the week in November.

East Carolina Pirates

Signees: Beacon (N.Y.) John F. Kennedy wing Elijah Hughes; Little Rock (Ark.) Southwest Christian point guard Shawn Williams

Verbal commitments: None

Recent activity/Other 2016 targets: Longtime high school targets Ashbrook (N.C.) forward Isaiah Whaley and Simeon (Ill.) win Ben Coupet are still available. ECU was after both in the summer and fall, but the interest level now is unclear. ECU looks like it will take awhile to fill its class.
