2017 Denton Ryan defensive end Earnest Brown IV has seen interest in him increase big-time in the last couple months and all of it just makes Brown IV feel lucky.
"It's been great. I stay busy and it's been amazing. I'm truly blessed to get this opportunity."
Oklahoma, SMU, Houston, Northwestern, Texas and Texas A&M all got recent visits from Brown IV for junior days and he enjoyed all of them.
"OU was great. They showed me around the sports club and we went to a basketball game. Northwestern just treated me like home and everything they did was great especially academically," Brown IV told Scout's Gabe Brooks. "Texas, Texas A&M were great. Coach Strong and coach Sumlin are great guys. Coach Orlando didn't leave my side almost the entire time. With SMU, coach Loepp, we've been talking a lot and it's been great."
Brown IV has built a solid relationship with SMU defensive backs coach Jess Loepp as well as defensive line coach Buddy Wyatt.
"They just told me that I'd be a great fit at SMU and they need more guys like me at SMU. I feel comfortable talking with them about anything that I'm down about, I can go to them and talk about it. It's like family," Brown IV said. "I don't want to see a coach and not be able to talk with them about anything. I have to have that connection."
On his visit to SMU recently, the staff stressed academics and being able to balance the lifestyle of a student-athlete.
"I liked it. They showed me around the facility and I'm planning on going back there on March 15," Brown IV said. "They just mainly focused on academics, which I really liked. I want to major in Business. They told me they have a mental person that you can talk with and also have a close relationship with, which stood out to me."
Most schools are looking at Brown at strong side defensive end and schools like Northwestern, Oklahoma, Baylor, Texas, Texas A&M, SMU and Houston are standing out early. Brown IV will visit Baylor on March 18 for Friday Night Lights and will try to get to Texas A&M and Texas Tech later in the spring.
Brown IV would like to be decided by the start of his senior season.
