Troy James picks up SMU offer

Hatts talked with 2017 Madison Prep (La.) defensive tackle Troy James about his SMU offer.

After learning about the SMU football program a great deal growing up, it was a special moment when 2017 Madison Prep HS (Tex.) defensive tackle Troy James received an offer from SMU and could report back to his dad with the good news.

“It means a great deal because growing up my father made me watch every sports team, he knew a lot about those guys, he knew a lot about Pony Express,” James said, “And he told me Pony Express was when they had a lot of good players so we were just sitting there laughing talking about it, so when I received the offer I called him and told him he came sat me down and told me a lot about it and a lot about the school’s history and all.”

James loves that the school has so much history but also appreciates the atmosphere at games and how the players are received.

“The biggest thing I like about the school will be the history,” James said, “Also I just like the atmosphere, I just like the atmosphere of the stadium on television and the fans up there are 100 percent behind their team and me seeing that it makes me confident that if I go up there they are going to be behind me and not try to down talk me.”

James was caught a little by surprise by the offer but was extremely excited after a phone call with the staff and plans to visit the school as soon as he can.

“The relationship with the coaches is getting better, I would like to make it to one of their spring practices but I don’t know if I’m going to be able to make it,” James said before saying he will definitely be there for the spring game to see the coaches.

When he does take his visit to SMU, there are going to be a couple of key things he will be looking for on the academic side to make sure he’s fully prepared in every way.

“When I go to SMU, I’m going to look at how the classroom settings are, I’m going to ask the coaches if they have tutors for the players,” James said, “Like what’s their graduation percentage and things like that, what’s their plan to help me get through college.”

James has enjoyed the recruiting process but understands it’s a long process and there are plenty more offers to come.

Currently James holds offers from Cincinnati, Tulsa, SMU, San Diego State, Jackson, University of Louisiana Monroe, Louisiana Lafayette and McNeese State.
