2016 PF Harry Froling Signing Day Profile

Billy breaks down SMU's newest 2016 signee Scout 4-star power forward Harry Froling.

Audible: "One of the biggest reasons I chose SMU was the opportunity to build something," Froling told Scout. "Larry, [Tim Jankovich] and K.T. [Turner] have been doing a great job recruiting me, and the fans were amazing.

How Froling Fits

Froling is one of the most versatile players that SMU has landed under Larry Brown and that should serve SMU well as Froling comes in at a time where minutes and opportunities are plentiful in the front court. The potential of SMU not ending up with Bruno Fernando and Ted Kapita means that Froling is more important than ever for SMU to land. He's versatile and will be able to be put into a few different positions to succeed because of it.

He's got a bit of Kevin Love in him and as he gets into SMU's strength and conditioning program, Froling will get even better inside the paint. SMU's strength program has shown to be able to get players in serious shape quickly as Markus Kennedy is a great example of that. Froling isn't out of shape, but the traveling tour of games and events this spring wore on him a bit as some Scout analysts noted. Froling has all the tools to be solid at SMU and bring a dimension from a big man that SMU hasn't really had from three-point range. That will stretch the defense and allow for more room for SMU's players to operate.

Expectations for 2016-17

With Ben Moore and Semi Ojeleye the only returning true front court players, Froling will see immediate playing time. With Fernando and Kapita's ability to sign uncertain, Froling is in an even better position to succeed early. With Froling arriving in June to join SMU for summer workouts, he'll be ahead of the curve on playing time and picking up SMU's system. It'll be interesting to see how much SMU's sets change when Froling enters the game. Since he'll have the summer to get all geared up and settled in, it's not hard to think Froling could find himself on the freshmen all-conference lists after the season. If it's a tight, three or four big man rotation upfront, Froling will have even more of an opportunity to succeed.

One thing to watch is how the season takes a toll on Froling. Sterling Brown, Ben Moore, Jarrey Foster and other freshmen have played well in the past, but usually there's a wall that freshmen hit. If Froling can avoid this, SMU will be in really good shape this season. Froling has plenty of opportunities to succeed. It's just how quickly Froling adapts and sees that success.

SMU Career Expectations

Froling picked SMU to develop his game for the next level and with his size and versatile game, Larry Brown's task is doing just that. As Ben Moore will depart after next year, Froling should have the keys to the front court with Ojeleye and then be the star for quite some time. SMU fans will love his compete level and his ability to pop out and hit the three. If he can develop that consistency and then pair that with his inside game, SMU is going to have a great forward on its hands. Froling's length will be a huge add to the front court that really lacked that following the departure of Yanick Moreira and Cannen Cunningham. Froling can develop into an all-conference power forward and is poised to have a great SMU career with all of his different areas of his game.
