2016 SMU Football Player Profile: TE Corey Rau

Billy breaks down SMU tight end Corey Rau in the latest Pony Stampede Player Profile.

Position: Three-Back
Size: 6-4, 248
Year: Freshman
High School: Cinco Ranch HS
Hometown: Katy, Tex.

Tight end Corey Rau was one of the best recruits that Chad Morris and company have landed since his arrival. SMU had to hold off late charges from Texas and others to keep Rau in the class. He was already ready to get to SMU and contribute when he committed, but now that he's finally here, Rau figures to be in the mix for plenty of playing time.

2016 Outlook

With Jeremiah Gaines continuing to be challenged by the SMU staff, Rau will have a chance to play right away and potentially start. Gaines hasn't contributed as much as the staff would like him to and Rau's knocking on the door to start.

Rau is a versatile tight end that SMU can use in the passing game and have him contribute in the run blocking game too. That's the key for SMU's offense is production out of the three-back role and Rau figures to play a big role in that.

It's no secret the staff has raved about Rau and his ability to contribute right away.

It's not out of the question for Rau to start a couple games into the season. Rau is pushing hard playing time and it's because of his talent and being physically ready.

Rau's going to be a big target before long for SMU quarterbacks and whether it really happens this year, will be seen. Rau has the talent to make an freshman All-AAC team this year if he gets enough opportunities.

In SMU's offense, if it's hitting on all cylinders, there's a good chance that Rau will have a big part in that this season if he can jump Gaines.
