Despite Evan Brown's upside, the Carroll offensive lineman held just offers from Yale and Tulsa, among a few others. But even with programs like TCU, Stanford and Texas A&M expressing interest, SMU was always the place for Brown with a solid combination of academics and athletics.
Brown was the epitome of consistency in 2015 after starting all 12 games and being one of, if not, the most talented lineman across the SMU offensive line. Granted as a whole the group played subpar, but Brown along with senior Taylor Lasecki made things bearable for the running backs and Matt Davis.
Where he fits
Now a junior, Brown will be tasked with stepping into the center position and being the offensive line’s vocal leader. Despite playing guard his first two years at SMU, the Southlake native is undoubtedly smart enough to make the necessary calls he’ll need to as the center, and his athleticism makes him a good fit in the middle.
As SMU’s best offensive lineman, expectations are going to be considerably high for Brown. With an undetermined surrounding cast still, especially with the loss of Chad Pursley, Brown will have to step up even more as a leader and motivator for his fellow linemen. There’s no doubt Brown is smart enough to know what he has to do to be successful this year, but the question heading into the season should be how can he make those playing with him better?
