A three-star recruit,Courtland Sutton was named first-team All-District as a tight end and second team as a safety his senior year. Sutton was also named first-team All-District as a safety during his junior year. Sutton picked SMU over offers from BYU, Colorado and Rice.

2015 Recap

It was a special season for SMU’s redshirt freshman wide-receiver last year. After he set a SMU freshman receiving record with 862 receiving yards and tied the record for most touchdown receptions by a freshman with 9. Sutton’s size proved to be a huge asset for SMU and especially helped in the Mustangs downfield passing game. At times, Sutton struggled, however, with how much attention he received as the season went along. This should be less of an issue for him this year given the depth the Mustangs have at that position. The standout wide receiver’s year didn’t end with the Mustangs loss to Memphis, however, as he went on to join the SMU basketball team appearing in 3 games totalling 3 points, 2 rebounds.

Grade: B+

2016 Outlook

Big things are expected from Sutton once again this year as he emerged as the leader of this wide receiving group in just his second year. He was also named to the Biletnikoff Award and Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award preseason watch lists. Given SMU plans to go even faster this season, it wouldn’t be surprising at all to see Sutton put up over 1,000 yards and double digit touchdowns this season. If there is one thing Sutton could improve on this season it’s just continuing to put pressure on the defense throughout the game.

There’s no question Sutton is one of the leaders of this offense and going into their second year together, the connection between Davis and him will continue to grow. Part of this connection will once again center around Sutton being the Mustang’s biggest downfield threat.

I expect another big season from SMU’s most important target and more consistent one as well. The Mustangs increased depth will only help Sutton and take much of the focus off of him. Mustangs should be expecting a first team all-conference season from Sutton.
