Five Players to Watch: SMU vs. Tulsa

Demo breaks down five players to watch on Tulsa as SMU takes on the Golden Hurricane on Friday night.

Sr. QB Dane Evans

Evans is completing 59.3 percent of his passes this season and has thrown for 888 yards and eight touchdowns. He has been intercepted six times so there might be some opportunities for SMU (tied for first in FBS with 12 interceptions) to create some turnovers. The 6-1, 210 pound quarterback from Sanger, TX, has made 30 starts for the Golden Hurricane and is fourth all-time on the school’s career passing yards and TD passes.

Sr. WR Keevan Lucas

Lucas is Evans favorite target through four games as the pair have hooked up on 24 passes for 395 yards and five touchdowns. The 5-10, 195 pound wide out is a two-year letterman and has made 21 starts for Tulsa. He is 13th all-time on Tulsa’s career receiving list. He missed most of last season after tearing his patella tendon against Houston in the fourth game of the season—no doubt he is trying to make up for lost time in 2016.

Jr. RB D’Angelo Brewer

Brewer has 534 rushing yards on the season with three touchdowns. His longest run was of 40 yards and he is averaging 5.5 yards per carry. Brewer leads the team in all-purpose yards with 543.  The 5-9, 185 pound junior is a two-year letterman with 23 starts under his belt. Last season he led the team with 837 yards on the ground with six scores and 5.2 yards per carry average. He looks to be running with much more confidence this season and should finish the season with more yards than last year.

Sr. SS Jeremy Brady

Brady is third on the team with 26 total tackles. He also is one of four Golden Hurricane players to pick of a pass this season. The 5-10, 197 pound safety is in his second season back on the defensive side of the ball as he was a running back for Tulsa in 2014. Last season, he totaled 71 tackles and had three pass breakups and two interceptions.

Sr. LB Trent Martin

The Golden Hurricane's leading tackler, Martin has tallied up 29 stops this season, 2.5 for a loss, and has broken up three passes. The 6-2, 232 pound linebacker has 31 starts in his Tulsa career and has 234 career tackles including 28.5 for a loss, and has forced four fumbles. A large chunk of his career totals. came last season. He tallied 104 tackles in 2015 and made 14 stops for a loss, recorded two sacks, forced four fumbles, and made three pass breakups.
