SMU Hoops Practice Notebook Oct. 11

Pony Stampede's Phil Mayer was out at SMU basketball practice and has interviews with Ben Moore, Sterling Brown and Tim Jankovich plus, our notebook.

SMU coach Tim Jankovich

Practice Notebook:

Leo Kontopolous

Kontopolous, the German, walk-on forward had a strong practice. Standing at 6’9’’, Tim Jankovich had him practicing with the big men, working on his post moves and passing out of double teams. Kontopolous also shot the ball well. He was nearly automatic on catch-and-shoot three pointers from the top of the key. It will be interesting to see whether Kontopolous can work his way into some minutes this season.

Jarrey Foster

Foster showed off his versatility in today’s practice. He was used as both the ball handler and the screener in the pick and roll, and got touches both in the post and on the perimeter in certain plays. With only nine scholarship players this year, Foster’s ability to play multiple positions will be crucial for the team.

Other Notes

  • Jankovich is committed to the three point shot. He ran a catch-and-shoot drill where every player was launching 3s.
  • In addition to Kontopolous, Ben Emelogu and Tom Wilson were consistently draining shots from beyond the arc.
  • Coach Jankovich emphasized drive-and-kick and pick and roll, as the team spent a solid amount of time working on each.
  • Emelogu, Semi Ojeleye and Sterling Brown all looked like they added muscle over the summer.
