When an athlete picks up their first college scholarship offer, it is always special. But when it comes from a school he likes it’s even sweeter.
SMU has had its eye on 2019 Coppell Safety Jonathan McGill ever since he camped with the Mustangs in June of 2015.
Since then McGill has been in contact with a slew of SMU coaches—primarily Joe Craddock, but also Chad Morris, Van Malone, and Jess Loepp.
“I love the coaching staff,” McGill said. “They come across as player’s coaches. They reach out to them a lot and give great feed back to them. I talked to a few players on my visits up there and they said that the coaching staff is real and the best in Texas to ever do it. The definitely want to help the player out more than themselves and I really like that about the coaches.”
McGill has visited the Hilltop five times now has had the opportunity to experience how SMU does game day earlier this season.
“I loved the atmosphere,” he said. “I went on a game day and saw the boulevard. There is just so many fans out there cheering—the fan atmosphere is really good there.”
Even though his frequent contact with SMU led McGill to believe he would be offered, he was still take aback when Coppell coach Mike Dewitt called him into his office Thursday Dec. 8.
“It was kind of expected, but it was still a surprise to have my coach come and tell me to come down to his office to talk with coach Craddock,” McGill said. “It shocked me because it was in the middle of the school day.”
McGill says it is a welcome relief to pick up the first offer, but he isn’t finished putting in work. Getting offered by SMU simply shows him that his hard work is starting to pay off.
“I’ve been putting a lot of work lately, just trying to get an offer,” he said. “I just trusted the process and was patient. And to be offered by one of my favorite schools is really big for me.”
Coppell’s season came to an end back in November, so McGill has had the chance to start planning some college visits.
“I’m pretty sure I’ll visit SMU sometimes soon,” he said. “I also want to reach out to visit Texas A&M and I plan on visiting TCU in the spring.”
