2017 Denton (Tex.) Ryan linebacker and running back Tyreke Davis has been committed to North Texas since April, but now SMU has entered the mix with a recent offer. Davis was told to give the SMU coaches a call and that's when the staff offered.
"It was nice of them to offer me. I'm still very firm with UNT, but this is just something I'll have to sit down and talk with my mom about," Davis said. "They're a good school and some of my friends go there. Coach Loepp and coach Mac are good people."
The 5-10, 202-pound athlete has a teammate in Delano Robinson that's committed to SMU and while it'd be fun to play with his Ryan teammate and friend, Davis still has to do what's best for him.
"That'd be cool since we were playing together since we were little kids, but I have to go with the best fit for me," Davis said. "I had gone up there and visited, but I would say I'd have to develop a relationship. I have to sit down with my mom and see what's best for me. They're going to come do a home visit and then get me on a visit."
The long-time North Texas commit now has a decision to make and SMU has a long way to go in building a relationship since North Texas has been there from the get-go, Davis said.
"It's fine. I love coach Reffett and the coaching staff at UNT. I felt it was a good fit and a good chance to turn the program around. They've just been there since Day 1 and acted like they cared," Davis said. "They see me at nickel, outside linebacker. I get to blitz on the outside and it fits into my scheme pretty well.
The two-star athlete said that although he's been playing both ways and his team fell short of the ultimate goal, he enjoyed his senior season.
"The season went great. We fell short of our goal, but it was a pretty good season overall," Davis said. "I'm used to playing both ways. It was fine. I like defense more because I like to hit though. I feel like I'm better at linebacker because I can trigger path on the ball."
New Mexico State and Fresno State have also offered Davis, but he's only hearing from SMU at this point. Davis will visit North Texas on his official visit on January 13 and doesn't have a date for the SMU visit yet.
