Hot Button: Best SMU Linebacker Signee

PonyStampede publisher Billy Embody and managing editor Patrick Engel debate which SMU linebacker signee is the best in this premium discussion.

Billy: Shaine Hailey

I'm a big Shaine Hailey fan. With his body looking the way it is already, I really like what he could bring at linebacker for SMU. He can run sideline to sideline and for his size, moves really well. He's probably at more like 215 right now and for that reason and the way his body is, I like him to be able to compete early for playing time, especially on special teams. Hailey makes the move to SMU from right down the road at Bishop Dunne to the Hilltop.

Patrick: Delano Robinson

SMU has just one true linebacker and one star linebacker in this class, but I’m going with Robinson, who’s coming in to play the star. He’s a tough player who always seems to be around the ball, especially against the run. He impressed me in the two games I saw him this year and he was better in coverage, especially with ball skills, than I thought he’d be when I first watched him on film. I think he’ll take a little time to transition to the star from safety, especially the coverage aspect, but he’s capable of picking it up quickly. If he turns into a good defender in man coverage, he’s going to be very productive. If he was a little more fluid through the hips, he would have offers from all over. Still, I think SMU got a steal in him.
