Claude Mathis ready to get back to high school ranks for new challenge at Marshall after two years at SMU

Claude Mathis returned to the high school ranks on Thursday, accepting the athletic director and head football coach position at Marshall High School, after two seasons at SMU as running backs coach. It was a tough decision, but wanting to spend more time with his kids was what brought him back to high school.

It's been a roller coaster from the beginning of February for Claude Mathis. The now former SMU running backs coach accepted the Marshall athletic director and football coach positions on Thursday after being confirmed by the school district.

"I'm very excited. I see a lot of good young men and women coming up through the system," Mathis told Scout. "It's suppose to be some of the best classes to come through Marshall in many years. It's intriguing."

From the baseball team, to seniors, to younger students and parents of students came out to support Mathis last week and that stood out to him.

"That stood tall with me," Mathis explained. "All the seniors showing up and the young kids being there. They wanted to know who their head coach would be and they let me know that they were ready to go to work. All the things that Dr. Gibson had been telling about the program held true yesterday."

It's a return to the high school ranks for the former DeSoto High School football coach, who went 74-18 in his time at the program. It wasn't an easy move, but after two seasons at SMU, it was time to return to the high school ranks to spend more time with his children. His oldest, Champ, is a sophomore at DeSoto.

"I approached coach Morris about me wanting to get back and coach my kids. He was okay with it as long as I was okay with it. If I wasn't okay with it, then he wasn't going to be okay with it," Mathis said. "He let me make that decision and he supports me 100 percent. I thank god for coach Morris every day."

It's another challenge for Mathis, but the biggest challenge was leaving the relationships he's built at SMU.

Patience part of learning experience at SMU

When Chad Morris first reached out to Mathis days after accepting the job as SMU's next head football coach, Mathis did backflips about getting the chance to head to the collegiate level as an assistant.

Mathis accepted a position as running backs coach, giving up control of his own program for a chance to recruit, coach and learn at the college level.

It wasn't difficult though to give up that control, saying his patience and humble nature helped with that. An already patient man learned more of that at SMU.

"I was always patient, but I became more patient when I got there," Mathis said. "It's like coach Morris says, sometimes you want things to happen so fast, but it's not going to happen that way."

It wasn't learning new plays or a coaching style, but how to say the things in Morris' system, for example, that challenged Mathis the most.

"The difficult part is asking for help because there's a lot of things you think you know, but the terminology is different at the collegiate level," Mathis said. "You know everything, but sometimes you don't know everything because the terminology is different and speaking their language. They call it different and you got to ask them. Asking for help was the biggest thing, but me not running my program wasn't difficult."

Mathis credited the "unbelievable" staff that Morris put together at SMU for helping him, proceeding to name off every staff member from defensive coordinator Van Malone to offensive line coach Dustin Fry to director of football operations Randy Ross, for the support given to him on The Hilltop.

Making the transition from a high school coach hosting college coaches from around the country at one of the most talented programs in Texas to walking into DeSoto with a Mustang on his polo on Morris' first day on the recruiting trail, wasn't hard. That was fun for Mathis. It was already something he was doing, building relationships with other high school coaches.

"I love the recruiting process. I love meeting coaches and the kids," Mathis explained in a half-hour conversation with Pony Stampede. "I loved building those relationships and meeting high school coaches. That was huge for me. I love that. I'm very competitive. I don't like to lose, especially when the guy is in my area. Recruiting and keeping up with kids, it was unbelievable. I love doing that. That's right up my alley. Keeping up with them wasn't hard."

Mathis helped SMU get back into South Dallas, which was neglected under previous staffs, landing former players of his at DeSoto in James Proche II and Kevin Thomas, dipping into Cedar Hill to grab Eric Sutton and Michael Clark. His presence in his new home of East Texas was good to him as well, landing running backs from East Texas in Kayce Medlock and Aphonso Thomas in back-to-back classes.

Because of his relationships, whether it was the DFW area or out in Arp, Texas, being a high school coach held a big weight that helped him land players.

"It all depends on the relationships you have with coaches and I had great relationships with coaches because I was a high school coach, it made it that much easier," Mathis said. "The relationships I built carried over to the college level. High school coaches are the best in the world. It was fun."

Those relationships with coaches, parents and players helped mold his close-knit group at running back especially.

Claude Mathis

"We are a close group. I love those kids to death."

It didn't take Mathis telling Pony Stampede that he didn't want to talk about his running backs because he might break down.

You can see it in the way Mathis approaches everything, with energy, passion and care. The running backs at SMU faced adversity and also had plenty of success under Mathis' tutelage. It was a young, but talented group that Mathis coached up hard.

"I can't say enough about those kids and especially my kids at running back. I loved those guys. They mean the world to me. They did everything I asked of them. They busted their tails and I couldn't be more proud of them," Mathis said. "They knew that my name is on those guys and they had to perform well on and off the field. They did that. Their families were unbelievable to me and my family. I'm going to miss that."

You can't ask about his running backs without getting the full scouting report. Mathis still checks in on the running backs regularly, asking about grades, practice and life in general.

"Xavier Jones is going to be one of the best running backs to come through SMU. Then you got my young guns in Aphonso and Ke'Mon that are coming up through the system. You got Kayce coming out of East Texas. It's tough to leave them, it's tough," Mathis said. "If Xavier stays healthy, we go bowling, I really believe that. A healthy Xavier can take pressure off Braeden West, who got beat up during the year, but had a lot of carries and took that load on. Braeden West is a 1,000-yard rusher. They got two guys that could rush for 1,000 yards this year. I do believe that."

Jones is coming off a year that was cut short by injury, while West topped the 1,000-yard plateau as a sophomore and Freeman might be the next workhorse after Jones and West depart, with his combination of size and skill, despite transitioning from quarterback to running back in the fall last year.

Mathis said the buy-in from his players was built on them watching him at DeSoto before heading to SMU. Mathis won't change his style and that's what impressed his players the most.

"I showed them that I'm the same guy that's going to take care of you and believe in you, good or bad, it doesn't matter what, it was the relationship that I built with them through that whole process that I was going to be the guy that was going to be a father figure. I was going to raise them just like I raise my kids and those parents believed me," Mathis said between tears. "It's about relationships that we built over those two years. I will never trade that for nothing in the world. Those are some great kids and we had fun. I love my kids, I'm sorry. They're going to be good. We were so, so close."

At a breakfast shortly after National Signing Day, Mathis let his group know that he'd be returning to the high school ranks. That decision to return became official on Thursday.

"I told them and it was very hard. To show you how mature they are, they understood and they come from a good upbringing and those parents helped them through that whole process," Mathis said. "That's why I prepared those guys for difficult times in life. It was very difficult."

Mathis is bringing that same care now to a new group, but not before he gave new running backs coach Jeff Traylor the lowdown on the group, helping ease the transition.

Mathis leaning on experience with Morris, DeSoto to build Marshall

Mathis will still be the same Claude Mathis he's always been, he said. It's a return to being athletic director and head coach, something he did at Somerville and Austin LBJ high schools before DeSoto, but he's ready for the challenge.

"I've learned a lot. I'm going to take all that and use it wisely and hopefully be as good as those two that I've worked under," Mathis said. "It can be a hard task at times, but you've got to have people surrounding you that you can trust and support you.

"We want them to be the best on both girls and boys side of athletics."

His system and program will get SMU-ed a little, picking up details from watching Morris instill his culture at a stagnant program the past two seasons.

"Coach Morris told me to be myself and that's what I'm going to be. I'm going to be coach Mathis and be the same guy in the classroom with the kids, on the field. That's not going to change," Mathis said. "Some of the X's and O's and the way I run a football program when it comes to practice scheduling, some of that will change because I learned a lot from coach Morris and taken some things that are going to help me out in the future to get over the hump and win a state championship."

Winning state championships and achieving success in the classroom is what Mathis is striving for. Quick to quote Morris, Mathis said it takes a lot of people to make all that happen.

"It takes a village to raise a kid. It's going to take a village to get this thing done right."

A more patient, experienced Mathis will be leading that village starting this week.
