2018 offensive lineman Christian Duffie talks unexpected SMU offer

2018 Summer Creek (Tex.) offensive lineman Christian Duffie talks about his unexpected offer from SMU and his visit.

Saturday was just supposed to be a visit to get to know the SMU coaches, but ended up being a special day for 2018 Summer Creek HS (Tex.) offensive guard Christian Duffie after he received an offer from SMU.

“I wasn’t expecting it, I just thought I was going up for a visit, when I got there I sat down with coach Morris and coach Fry and they gave me the offer,” Duffie said.

As a local player, this offer meant a little more since it was from SMU and it means the 6-4, 305-pound lineman will have the opportunity to play in front of his family if he chooses the Mustangs.

“Playing close to home would mean a lot,” Duffie said, “Just knowing that my parents will most likely be at every home game and just to make the family and close relatives be able to see me play.”

Given that the school is located in the heart of Dallas, Duffie was also impressed with how quiet and isolated the school is.

“The campus is beautiful,” Duffie said, “When you’re on campus you forget that you’re in the middle of the city of Dallas because it feels so secluded.”

As part of his visit, Duffie and his mom got the opportunity to get to know coach Morris a little better and offensive line coach Dustin Fry as their relationship continues to develop.

“Coach Morris told me and my parents lots of stories that he had to tell us and it was just a nice experience,” Duffie said before elaborating on his relationship with coach Fry, “He’s young, pretty cool, we have a pretty good relationship that’s just starting off.”

Coach Fry was originally supposed to watch the Houston lineman earlier this year at a spring practice, but couldn’t make it after his flight was cancelled. Nonetheless, the two have spoken on the phone and exchanged text messages occasionally.

Duffie also has offers from Tulsa and Texas State, but doesn’t plan to make a decision until later this year.

“I will try to make one before my senior season, but if not it will be toward the end or right when it ends,” Duffie said.

Following his visit to SMU, the Houston guard is done visiting schools for the spring, but does plan to take a visit to SMU in the fall to take in a game.

“I definitely look forward to getting back up there and going to one of their games,” Duffie said, “I’m actually done with visits for the rest of the spring, I want to just focus on my spring practice and getting ready for the season.”
