2018 Alief Taylor HS (Tex.) outside linebacker Joseph Ogunbanjo was on his way home from the grocery store earlier this week when he received a surprise call from his high school coach letting him know he had received an offer from SMU.
“It was just a blessing to find that out because I know they have a great education system at SMU, that was one of the big things that stood out to me,” Ogunbanjo said.
The 6-3, 208-pound linebacker already has offers from Baylor, Arizona, Cincinnati, Houston, Louisiana-Lafayette, Texas State, Tulane and Texas A&M, but despite some bigger schools being in the mix, SMU will certainly be in play because of its academic reputation.
“It’s definitely up there in the conversation because of the great academics and that comes first in my family,” Ogunbanjo said, “That will put them in the conversation because that comes first, I’m not really worried about the football part and the team because the academics are the first thing that really pops out to me.”
The Alief linebacker also feels like he is a great fit in Van Malone’s defensive scheme no matter how he chooses to use him.
“I know if it was a 4-man front they would have me as a defensive end type person coming off that edge with speed and power and really cause some havoc in the backfield,” Ogunbanjo told PonyStampede, “In a 3-4 I can be that rushing outside linebacker coming off the edge and I can drop back in coverage.”
The Houston linebacker plans to get in touch with the coaches soon to schedule a visit at some point this summer.
