Southern Methodist University alumni and students expectations rose with the hiring of new Head Coach June Jones.
Jones has lived up to most of those expectations so far this spring and summer, with the best test coming this fall. The veteran coach and staff have already proven they can recruit, earning three key pledges from defensive players. A new attitude has been established on the Hilltop and a new excitment has arrived in Dallas.
Today marks the first of three camps sessions for the Mustangs, a time that the SMU coaching staff will spend teaching and getting to know current and future prospects.
Camp Jones gets underway Tuesday with the start of the three day instructional camp for grades 9th-12th graders. Registration begins at Noon with the first session beginning at 3 p.m. There will also be an evening session.
After conclusion of the three day camp on Thursday, the Mustangs will have two one day senior camps on Saturday and Sunday. Many of the states, area and local athletes are expected this weekend. Some national quarterback prospects are also expected to be in attendance.
SMU's final camp will be the annual 7-on-7 team camp on June 18th with some of the top area and local teams participating. Stay tuned to PonyStampede.com for a complete list of teams and campers.
Camp coverage will consist of daily notebooks, photos and analysis of this year's camp participants. Camp updates of prospects in attendance will be conducted over the next few weeks to get their thoughts of Coach Jones and the Mustang camps.
"These camps give prospects a chance to see how it's like to be coached by June Jones," said Randy Ross Director of Football Operations and Camp Director. "It's a great teaching opportunity; it's a great opportunity for prospects to get to know our new coaching staff. We are expecting a great turnout."
