June Jones appeared more relaxed, more comfortable than he had in the previous 13 days of fall camp after Saturday morning's practice.
He noted to the press that he was pleased with his team's performance on a cooler Saturday, pleased with their progress and appears ready to make the announcement Monday who he was narrowing the quarterback race down to.
"We will come out Monday morning with our two quarterbacks that will get the most reps," Jones said Saturday. "We will prepare three, but two will get the most reps. We will start focusing on Rice on Monday."
In previous practices Jones started out that his team had a long way to go, not the case after the Mustang's last practice.
"I think both offensively and defensively we are starting to understand what we are doing," Jones said. "They are playing with more confidence, we will now have a little time to focus on what we are doing and will get better each day."
The Mustangs will have 11 days left to prepare for its season opener with Rice, something that quarterback coach and assistant head coach of offense Dan Morrison is looking forward to.
"We will be ready for Rice," Morrison said. "It will be good to play against someone other than ourselves. It will be fun to see how we play, I think we will definitely be ready to play."
While most of the focus Monday morning by media and fans will be about the quarterback race, other starting positions are up for grabs. Jones stated Saturday that he and his coaches would meet over the weekend to discuss who they may intend on red shirting for the year.
"We will take a look at who we will try to red shirt," Jones stated. "Of course all of that could change due to injuries, but we will discuss it as a staff, position by position on who we feel are ready to contribute and who will benefit from a red shirt year."
Jones plans on taking eight wide outs to RiceWhile Jones has played just four wide outs while at Hawaii, he admitted Saturday that eight will travel with the team and six to eight could see playing time. Don't be surprised that if this will be the starting lineup come game time against the Owls. Check out the Board Room for our thoughts on who will start.
Down to two quarterbacks? While rumors and speculation continued to swirl Sunday afternoon on message boards, it appears that at least one of the two finalist will be a true freshman if not both. Go to the Premium Message board the Board Room on PonyStampede.com to get our thoughts on the situation.
Who is nicknamed Scrappy on the offensive lineThat nickname would have to go to red shirt freshman Bryce Tenninison. Tenninison got into a few scuffles during Saturday's practice. It's good to see that the young lineman has some fight in him, he also appears to be fighting for a starting position.
