SMU Basketball schedule released for 08-09

The SMU men's basketball team announced its full 2008-09 schedule on Tuesday after the Conference USA slate was finalized. SMU will play 12 games against 2008 postseason teams and five games against last season's RPI top-50 including Texas A&M and Memphis as well and nine matchups against the top-100.

DALLAS (SMU) --- The SMU men's basketball team announced its full 2008-09 schedule on Tuesday after the Conference USA slate was finalized. SMU will play 12 games against 2008 postseason teams and five games against last season's RPI top-50 including Texas A&M and Memphis as well and nine matchups against the top-100. The season opens at South Florida on Nov. 14. The Mustangs host Colorado on Jan. 5 before Conference USA action begins when UTEP visits Moody Coliseum on Jan. 10.

The Conference USA schedule includes two games against NCAA finalist and defending league champion Memphis, CBI champion Tulsa, CBI participants UTEP and Houston, and Rice. The one-game matchups are at NIT qualifier UAB as well as Marshall and UCF with home contests against East Carolina, Tulane, and Southern Miss. The non-conference matchups include teams from the Big East (South Florida), Big Ten (Northwestern), Big 12 (Texas A&M and Colorado), Missouri Valley (Illinois State), and Mountain West (TCU). The Conference USA Championship is in Memphis March 11-14.

"It is great to have the schedule completed and sense the excitement as the season quickly approaches," says SMU head coach Matt Doherty. "The entire schedule shows the evolution of SMU basketball. We have 12 games on the schedule against 2008 postseason teams, including six of those at home. Moody Coliseum is going to be the site of great competition this season and beyond."

After opening Conference USA play at home against UTEP on Jan. 10, the Mustangs also host Tulane (Jan. 17), East Carolina (Jan. 24), Memphis (Feb. 4), Houston (Feb. 11), Rice (Feb. 21), Tulsa (Feb. 28), and Southern Miss (Mar. 4).

The 17-game home schedule begins with the SMU Tip-Off Classic from Nov. 21-23 with 2008 NIT participants Illinois State and Alabama State as well as Houston Baptist. The Mustangs also host Colorado, UT-San Antonio, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas A&M-International, and Cal State-Bakersfield.
