With 22 commitments already in hand for its 2009 recruiting class, June Jones and his coaching staff appear to be looking for some needed help on the defensive side of the ball.
One key need area on the defensive side of the ball that hasn't been addressed so far with a pledge is that of linebacker, PonyStampede.com confirmed with some state high school coaches and players that there are three state wide offers that have been extended for the linebacker position.
"Yes sir I have a SMU offer," Isadore told PonyStampede.com Wednesday. "I'm currently committed to TCU."
One of the newest Mustang's offers includes one to Reed, becoming the second Beaumont Texas linebacker to receive an offer from SMU.
"Taylor got his first offer this week," Coach Craig Stump said. "SMU offered last week, he is very excited about getting that first offer in hand. Houston and several other Conference USA schools are currently recruiting him."
What kind of player is Reed?
Reed played running back for Class 5A powerhouse Westbrook his freshman and sophomore seasons, making the transition to linebacker his junior year.
"We have the No. 1 running back in the state, so when we moved Taylor to linebacker he didn't disappoint," Coach Stump said. "He responded by earning first team all district honors as a junior and is having a great senior season so far."
Westbrook's season has been cut short due to Hurricane Ike; they have only played four games so far this season.
"Taylor has over 30 tackles and one interception in four games," Coach Stump said. "He is what you're looking for at linebacker. He is very athletic, very fast and loves to hit."
Stump describes Reed as a 6-foot-1, 210-pound athlete who runs a 4.5 to 4.6 forty.
"Taylor really flies to the ball," Coach Stump said. "He has great football instincts; he really has a nose for the football."
How does Reed feel about SMU?
"You will have to ask him for sure, but he seems really excited and impressed with SMU's coaching staff so far," Coach Stump said. "Whoever gets him at their school will get a great athlete and a great young man."
Stay tuned to PonyStampede.com for a feature interview with Reed later this week.
