Reasons to be thankful at SMU

What are some of the things you are thankful for on this Thanksgiving Holiday? PonyStampede.com wanted to take this time to reflect on this past season and some of the things that SMU fans should be thankful for. Happy Holidays to everyone, Go Mustangs!!!

Thanksgiving in today's society means a lot of things. Turkey Dinners, great deserts, spending time with family and of course watching the Dallas Cowboys.

This holiday season I wanted to take time out of my busy schedule to reflect on things that Southern Methodist University fans should be thankful for.

A 1-10 season record isn't on top of the list, but even during the worse of times as far as records, let's look at the positives that are surrounding this storied program.

Here are my five reasons we should be thankful in no particular order.

1.The arrival of June Jones and the discipline he instilling while changing the culture of the SMU program. Coach Jones is the type of coach that is a teacher of the game. No one knows offense better than he does, I truly expect him to get this program turned around, as he has said several times, it's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when. Coach Jones demands respect; you have to earn his respect. Once you have it's easy to see why he will be successful. A very genuine person, a down to earth coach who believes in teaching the players the game and life fundamentals that will help to make them successful after the game of football.

2.This team started many freshmen including true freshman quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell. This young man has a very special arm and the future is bright for this team and offense with 90 percent of the team returning next fall. The receiving duo of Aldrick Robinson (a sophomore, Emmanuel Sanders (a junior) and several younger receivers promises to provide an experienced group to run this high power offense.

3.A recruiting class that is probably one of the best assembled on the Hilltop in the past decade. A remarkable feat by Coach Jones and his coaching staff especially for a team that may have back to back 1-11 seasons, these recruits believe in Jones and his plans for SMU. While some may question the quality of this class, when can you ever remember SMU having over 20 pledges at this time of the year? Team rankings have this class rated second in Conference USA, there are several guys in the class that are currently under rated.

4.I'm also thankful for the 13 seniors that will represent SMU for the very last time this Saturday. These young men have given their heart and souls to this program. While wins may have not been a premium, these young men represented their school with character, pride and integrity. Each SMU alumni should be proud of these young men; many will become lawyers, doctors and businessmen in our surrounding areas. One thing they can be thankful for is the quality education they received at the University on the Hilltop.

5.I'm thankful for family, my new family here at PonyStampede.com. I want to thank each and every one of you for your friendship, your trust, your patronage and your love for the Mustangs. I have truly enjoyed the last seven months; I truly appreciate each of you welcoming me into the Mustang family. Media coverage has increased three times over this past season, something all Mustangs fans should be thankful for.

Hopefully next year at this time I will be doing a top 10 list of why to be thankful at SMU, including a winning season and a bowl game.
