Darrius Morrow scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds for East Carolina, which beat SMU 80-74 on Saturday. Bamba Fall and Paul McCoy scored 16 apiece to lead SMU (6-11, 1-4 Conference USA). Derek Williams added 14 points and Robert Nyakundi had 11.
Brock Young scored 16 points and James Legan and Jamar Abrams had 14 apiece for the Pirates (10-8, 2-3 Conference USA). Sam Hinnant added 12 points.
The Mustangs led by seven halfway through the second half but the Pirates battled back in a game that featured 12 lead changes. East Carolina hit four free throws in the final 25 seconds to help seal the win.
The Mustangs hit 17-for-21 from the free throw line with Fall and Williams each going perfect in four tries. Williams has scored at least 14 points in four straight games and six of the last eight contests.
Fall hit 6-of-7 from the field with three blocks and a career-high tying three assists for SMU. He now has 225 career blocks, which is seventh in C-USA history. He is one behind Kelly Wise, who had 226 in his career at Memphis. Fall has 14 multi-block games in 17 outings this season.
McCoy tied for the team lead for SMU in scoring (16), assists (4), and steals (1) while also grabbing a team-high seven rebounds. It was the third time in four games he had seven boards. McCoy shot 6-for-11 on the game.
The Mustangs shot 50 percent for the game against 47.5 percent for ECU. The Pirates led 39-38 at the half.
