Davis believes in June Jones' winning plans

Crockett athlete Ja'Gared Davis (6-0, 200) believes SMU coach June Jones and his staff can turn things on the Hilltop, and he wants to be part of it. That's the primary reason why Davis committed to SMU on Monday. "I'd like to help out the team, and get it back on a winning streak," Davis said.

Davis has five offers and narrowed down his choices to SMU and Louisiana Tech. He said his other offers included those from Tulsa and Baylor.

"I based my decision [to go to SMU] on the coaches, the location and the environment," Davis said.

Davis said he could play outside linebacker or strong safety at SMU. At Crockett, Davis played outside linebacker, free safety and strong safety in 2008.

He had 100 tackles (eight for loss), four interceptions and four pass breakups. He was named District 20-3A's co-defensive MVP.

After Davis signs with SMU Feb. 4, he'll start preparing for his final track season. Davis finished fifth in the 300-meter hurdles at last May's Class 3A state meet. He plans on competing in the 300 and 110 hurdles this spring.
