Cedar Park junior defensive end Holmes Onwukaife said he was amazed when he received an offer from SMU. Onwukaife (6-2, 220) said the fact that the Mustangs are already recruiting juniors was a signal to him that things are shaping up on the Hilltop.
"I was surprised and very happy," Onwukaife said. "They had been sending out an occasional mailing. They are already getting started on the early recruiting. It was nice to see that."
In fact, Onwukaife (pronounced on-woo-kai-fay) said SMU coach June Jones was on the Cedar Park campus Tuesday checking out film and speaking with the coaching staff.
"I thanked him for the offer," Onwukaife said. "They are definitely interested in me. They gave me an offer ,and when you do that you know there's nothing holding them back."
Onwukaife has two offers, which includes one from Rice. He said Duke has been in contact quite a bit. He plans on attending SMU's junior day on Saturday. It will be his first visit to Dallas. He has attended one at A&M and has received invitations to ones at Oklahoma State, Nebraska and Michigan State.
Onwukaife will be a third-year starter this fall. He was a District 16-5A all-district selection in 2008 (50 tackles and nine sacks) and a second-teamer in 2007. He will split time at defensive end and outside linebacker in 2009. He said he is also being recruited as an outside linebacker.
