"I got the offer a couple of weeks ago when I was down south for a baseball tournament. I hadn't gotten that many letters from them at the the time, but I sent them my highlight tape. I talked to Coach Reinebold and he said that they loved the highlight video. He said that they also wanted to offer me a full ride scholarship," stated Nichols to PonyStampede.com last week.
At 6-3, 180 pounds, Nichols benches 250 pounds and squats 360. He currently has a 4.5 forty, and a knack for the ball. His 6 interceptions led Louisiana 5A District-1 football. His only current offer is from SMU, but is also hearing from Southern Miss, Louisiana Tech, Vanderbilt, Arkansas, and Ole Miss. He did tell PonyStampede.com that SMU would make his list of top three schools.
As you go down the SMU offer list in 2010 recruiting class, you notice a lot of guys that will be high three to four star players. June Jones and crew have come in and been not afraid to offer the nation's best talent. Nichols feels honored that he has got an offer so early.
"Its a huge compliment. I'm not some big high star player. If he is offering me after seeing my highlight tape, I take it as a huge compliment. He thinks that I would fit in well there," said Nichols.
So should SMU fans expect the 2010 prospect to pull the trigger when he does hit campus?
"I don't know. It really depends on the campus and how I feel about the coaching staff in general. I will see how SMU is when I visit, and I will go from there," stated the free safety. "I'm not going to wait for the last day or anything like that, but I'm going to make sure that I pick the best school for me. I want to be comfortable in my decision."
A 1st Team All-District performer last season, Nichols describes himself as a player with "lots of heart, a love for the game, and high intensity." He is also a starting outfielder for the Vikings varsity baseball team. Airline is currently 17-9 overall on the diamond.
Nichols has a 3.5 GPA and will take the ACT in June. PonyStampede.com will have more Connor Nichols updates as they become available.
