At 6'6, 250 pounds, Beau Carpenter now holds offers from Oklahoma State, Harvard, Rice, Northwestern, Houston, and SMU. He was not shy to admit that Texas Tech is his favorite school, but that the Raiders were not recruiting him very hard at this point.
"SMU is an hour drive at the most, so that would be great for me and my family." said Carpenter. "The first thing that I'm looking for in a school is definitely academics. I want a school with some credibility. When I go to apply for a job, I want them to see my school. Being a close to home isn't that big of a factor, but if it came down to say OSU or SMU, it would be easier for me to pick SMU since it's closer to home."
Sulphur Springs won last year's Class 4A-Division II state championship with a 14-2 record. Carpenter's offensive line play was crucial for 2009 Auburn quarterback signee Tyrik Rollison. Now the Wildcats will focus their attention on grooming another quarterback this spring and summer.
"School is about to end, so we are transitioning into summer workouts, but it was a great spring," said the junior. "I have started getting back into the rhythm and I'm really working on my footwork drills."
So when should we expect to see a decision from Carpenter?
"I think that I want to make my decision right after the beginning of the season. I want to make sure I go to all the schools that I'm interested in. I'm thinking maybe about late September."
Where will Carpenter being visiting this summer?
"I'm going to TCU's camp and had a schedule visit to Northwestern, but then OSU offered and they want me to come to their camp that weekend. I guess I will have to wait to go to Northwestern until this fall," said the offensive tackle. "I'm pretty sure my mom scheduled me for the SMU camp as well."
