Boaz Linebacker Enjoys His Trip To SMU

With already one linebacker locked up in the 2010 recruiting class, the Mustangs will look to take three more at the position before it's all said and done. One offeree who appears to be very interested in being one of the three is Boaz, Alabama's Chase Williams. Come inside to read what Williams had to say about his trip to SMU this past weekend!

With already one linebacker locked up in the 2010 recruiting class, the Mustangs will look to take three more at the position before it's all said and done. One offeree who appears to be very interested in being one of the three is Boaz, Alabama's Chase Williams. The junior visited SMU this weekend with teammate Drew Phillips, and walked away very impressed.

"The campus was amazing. It's a five star college in my book. It's pretty ridiculous," stated Williams to PonyStampede.com on Sunday night. "I have offers from SMU, Tennessee Martin, I was told Tennessee Chattanooga is going to offer me, UAB is probably going to offer, and Tulane. SMU is definitely my number one right now. We are going to La Tech tomorrow, but I don't know if they will hold a candle to SMU."

Even after missing five games last season with a knee injury, Williams put up spectacular numbers. His 110 tackles in only seven games, 10 tackles for a loss, and one sack, earned him 5A Honorable Mention DL All-State by the ASWA.

At 6-0, 205-pounds, Williams would project to be an outside linebacker in SMU's new 3-4 defensive scheme.

"Coach Mason and talked about how I could play outside linebacker in their system. He said that I would get soon to be playing time if I was to come to SMU," said Williams. "They have two senior starting linebackers this season, so it should set up that I could come in there and have immediate playing time as a freshman."

So what is the linebacker looking for in his college of choice?

"The biggest thing is I want to make sure I go to a school that has a good program in my major. I also want to make sure I will be able to stay in my classes and maintain my grades. I wouldn't want to go to Stanford, because their classes are ridiculous. SMU is a place that I could see myself going and getting a good education. I want to major in engineering, and SMU has a really good engineering program," said Williams. "Second, I want to know where I will fit into on the defense. SMU has mainly run the 4-3 or 3-4 and I can handle that. That is all we do back in Boaz."

Williams will look to make his decision sometime before the start of the season. He is still needing to take his ACT. PonyStampede.com will have more Chase Williams information as it becomes available.
