"Long story short, their outside linebacker position was full so they offered me to try middle linebacker," Holmes told InsideCarolina. "I prefer to stick to outside linebacker. Now, I'm just taking my time, doing my research, and enjoying the recruiting process."
Standing at 6'2", 220 lbs Holmes has run a 4.51 forty. Over 20 schools have offered Onwukaife a scholarship, including Baylor, Colorado, Iowa State, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Rice, SMU, Texas Tech, UCLA, Vanderbilt, and Virginia.
"I made two or three visits to SMU and have done a lot of research on the school. They are still one of my tops because they were one of my first offers. I strongly pay attention to that and like that," stated Onwukaife to PonyStampede.com. "Every once in a while me and Coach Hill will exchange emails back and fourth. He is keeping me updated on everything including on new recruits."
The level of recruits a school gets often sways other recruits into a decision. Onwukaife has taken notice of SMU's fast start in 2010.
"The first thing that I noticed was they are picking up commitments fast. Obviously they are doing something right inside the program if they are picking up this many guys. A lot of people seem to want to go there," stated the outside linebacker. "I think they have gotten off to a great start and doing well. I think that there is potential there for a great recruiting class. The season hasn't even started yet."
From time to time, players can change their minds on what they are looking for in a school. The 2010 recruit is sticking to his guns, still looking for a place with great academics first.
"I want a good academic school and a good football team. Some where with a good team chemistry, where they bond real well, help each other out, mentor the younger ones, and a great playing atmosphere."
Holmes piled up 50 tackles and 9 sacks for Cedar Park last season. Stay with Scout.com and PonyStampede.com for the very latest in recruiting.
