UCF (5-4) fights for its bowl life on Saturday as they host Playstation University (AKA the Houston Cougars) on Saturday. The Cougars had one of those season defining wins last week against Tulsa. Left for dead with under a minute left, Houston recovered an onside kick and then Matt Logan drilled a 51 yard field goal as time expired to defeat Tulsa 46-45. You have to wonder how much that win took out of Houston as they travel to play a tough UCF that wasn't blown out of the water last week against Texas. Still, the Knights give up 353 yards a game and with Case Keenum moving up the Heisman charts, Houston will keep winning.
UAB is quickly becoming UJW (University of Joe Webb), Webb again had an amazing game last week as the Blazers defeated Rice 56-28. Webb offers the ability to beat you effectively through the air and the ground. It makes you wonder how Auburn or Alabama missed this guy. But I digress. Memphis has been in a free fall all year after high expectations when the season began. They have the look of a team that is playing out of the string. With the way Webb's been playing, he may be enough all by himself.
UTEP at SMU UTEP's inconsistent season continues. The Miners can put points on the board, but stopping teams has been a problem all season. UTEP also isn't a very good road team. As they travel to SMU, the Mustangs are on a roll and perhaps have a brewing QB controversy on their hands as Kyle Padron has led them to 2 consecutive victories. Most importantly for SMU the prospects of a bowl are much brighter now than in the beginning of the season. Don't expect the Bowl Express to stop this week.
Tulane at Rice
Tulane will travel to Rice this week which is battle of two teams towards the bottom of Conference USA. Both teams are 1-9 in C-USA combined. The good news is someone has to win this game. I don't see Rice going 0-for this season. Rice gets their first win this week, somehow.
Southern Miss is a good team and probably a bowl team. Both teams sit a game behind East Carolina in C-USA East. This is one game Southern Miss must have in order to make a date in the C-USA title game. Expect their two pronged running attack to grind out a win against the Herd. Expect a big day from Damien Fletcher.
Southern Miss 24-19
East Carolina at Tulsa
East Carolina is still on target to play in the C-USA championship game with a one-game lead in C-USA East. With Marshall and Southern Miss nipping at their heels, the Pirates must keep winning. Patrick Pinckney and Dominique Lindsay will get ECU past a reeling Tulsa team.
