The Mustangs, a team that hadn't scored more than 73 points in a C-USA game this season, and only hit 70 twice in league play, beat the Cougars 94-83, scoring 61 second-half points.
"I didn't think we could win a game in the 70s," SMU head coach Matt Doherty told the Dallas Morning News. "I guess we can't win a game in the 70s. We can win a game in the 90s."
SMU, which trailed 39-33 at the half, shot 66.7 percent and hit nine 3-pointers in the second half of a Feb. 27 win over Houston and made 20 of 23 free throws.
June Jones, SMU's football coach, must have been proud.
The offense came from the usual suspects, just in unusually high doses. Forward Papa Dia scored a career-high 31 points to lead five Mustangs in double figures.
The scary thing for Doherty, whose team scoring average of 63.1 points per C-USA game is still just eighth in the league, is that his team's offensive explosion has them thinking about a late-season philosophy change.
"We can play that tempo," guard Derek Williams, who scored 18 points in that win, told the Dallas Morning News. "The ball just went in the hole for us."
--The Feb. 27 win over the Cougars was SMU's first win over Houston since joining C-USA for the 2005-06 season.
SMU also had its first C-USA win over Memphis earlier this season.
--The 94 points SMU scored on Feb. 27 against Houston were the second most the team ever scored in a C-USA game and the most it scored in a C-USA regulation game (99 points in a double-overtime win over UTEP on March 1, 2008).
The 61 points the team scored in the second half were more than the Mustangs had scored in eight of their first 28 games this season.
ON THE SPOT: As nice as it was to get the exciting shootout win over Houston on Feb. 27, the Mustangs aren't a team built for getting in run-and-gun shootouts. SMU absolutely allowed Houston to dictate the pace and, while it worked on Feb. 27, that's not how the Mustangs are likely to make a run in the C-USA Tournament. Doherty said after the game, "I've always taught let's keep it in the 50s and 60s."
