"I love the school," said McCowin of SMU. "I fell in love with SMU when I watched the bowl game (vs. Nevada). I like the academic side too. I'm going to an SMU camp and I hope that I get a shot to go there - hopefully I'll get an offer."
In 2009, the 4A Mustangs went 5-5 and McCowin feels confident that his team will improve in 2010.
"We had a solid three weeks of spring practice," he said. "We didn't go out in pads, but we're looking great. We have some new starters on defense and they understand their role. We didn't practice in pads because we have two scrimmages set for this summer - against Brenham and C.E. King - and there's a rule that you can't go in pads and keep both those scrimmages.
"I'm getting interest from UTEP, North Dakota, Rice, and Texas State. Some schools are looking at me as an outside linebacker. Some schools are looking at me as a strong safety. I'll play both this year. In the cover three and cover one, I'll be on the line at outside linebacker. In the cover two and cover four, I'll be at strong safety."
Last year, McCowin (5-foot-11 1/2, 210 pounds) had 60 tackles and broke up six passes (and forced one fumble) - and that was despite missing two games due to the flu. McCowin, who is also a top student, currently has a 3.58 GPA.
"I expect that my GPA will improve to a 3.62," said McCowin in regard to his academic performance this spring. "I made a 1590 and an 1110 in the two sections of the SAT that I've taken thus far."
