SMU football camp kicked off this morning in Kilgore and one of the top performers at the session was Class of 2012 wide receiver Grant Childress. PonyStampede.com spoke with Childress following the camp to find out more about the rising junior from Grace Community School in Tyler.

"The camp went pretty good," Childress said. "It was fun. I like SMU and it was good to talk with their coaches. They like to put the ball in the air and I like that style of offense. That's what we do at my school. I play slot receiver in a spread offense. My dad and I are planning to go to some of SMU's games this fall."

As a sophomore, Childress caught 50 passes for more than 700 yards with 12 touchdowns and he added 100 yards rushing (on 24 carries) with five more TDs.

"Right now, I'm 5-foot-11 and 165 pounds," Childress said. "In addition to football, I play basketball and run track. I run the 100, 200, long jump, and I run a leg on the 4 X 100 relay team.

"Our football team went 7-4 last year. My plans for the summer are to attend the Texas A&M camp and make some more combines. I think that my fastest 40 time is a 4.56, and I ran a 3.99 shuttle at a recent combine in Granbury."
