News spread like wildfire on Monday afternoon when Scout.com 3-star DE Zach Wood (Rowlett) committed to SMU. The nationally ranked No. 85 defensive end pushed SMU in the Top 50 team rankings after he was evaluated into their score.
"Wood is a solid get for SMU. It always seems like they were in the game to land him, but a few heavy hitters in the Big 12 were keeping him in the mix and were considering making him an offer," said Scout.com Midland's manager Greg Powers. "Ultimately, he did not have the ideal measurements that some of the BCS level programs were looking for, but make no mistake he is a quality, well-schooled player that plays the game the right way. He is just a football player. He is very athletic and makes plays behind the line of scrimmage."
The 6-foot-3, 256-pound Wood seemed to have a new attitude when talking with PonyStampede.com yesterday. Instead of a tired, almost defeated prospect, Wood was excited and filled with relief.
"It's going to be awesome to have it out of the way. I have been stressed out all summer, going to camps, trying to get my name out there and earn more scholarships. SMU is the best fit for me and I'm so happy it's over," said Wood. "I just liked everything about them. During the whole process they were just very cool with me. I'm going to just take my official to SMU. I'm 100% committed. I'm not visiting elsewhere."
The soon to be senior had 99 tackles, eight sacks, and an incredible 32 tackles for loss in 2009. Most programs saw Wood as a defensive end/hybrid linebacker type player. But, a couple schools wanted him to beef up and play inside.
The plan now is for Wood play DE at SMU, but could be moved eventually depending on his strength training in the next two years.
