Yesterday, Johnson arrived from Baton Rouge on an official visit to SMU, which concluded this evening. PonyStampede.com spoke with the senior from Capitol High School just before he boarded a plane to return home.
"It went great," said Johnson. "It was excellent and I learned a great deal about the SMU program. I met the coaching staff, including June Jones. He seems like a great guy and it would be good playing under him, especially with the type of offense he runs.
"I could possibly commit after I get home and talk things over with my mom and my coach. I definitely want to come back."
Johnson felt a camaraderie at SMU.
"The players were down to earth and welcomed me like I already part of the team," he said. "They told me that they remembered what it was like, being in my shoes. It was great feedback.
"Coach Reinebold is a lot of fun. I like his personality. He's straightforward and he's told me that I can always come to him for anything."
During the visit, Johnson found that he had another connection to SMU.
"My dad, Trumaine Johnson, played for (linebackers) coach (Joe) Haering with the Chicago Blitz in the USFL," said Johnson. Coach Jones and most of the staff knew of my dad from his days in the NFL."
