SMU decides on assistant basketball coach

According to sources, SMU has decided on a new assistant basketball coach to replace Reggie Geary.

According to sources, SMU will hire longtime basketball assistant coach Larry Mangino to replace Reggie Geary.

Mangino's last stint was with the Denver Nuggets, after seven seasons as an assistant at the Air Force Academy. He has also worked for the Mountain West Conference Network.

Mangino hoped to be hired as the Air Force head coach after the 2006-07, but the Falcons went in a different direction hiring Jeff Reynolds.

After taking a short break from basketball, Magino was hired by George Karl and the Denver Nuggets as one of Karl's six assistants.

It's unknown when the hiring will be announced by SMU.

Bio on the Mountain West Conference Network website:

Larry began his basketball career after graduating in 1983 from Montclair State University in New Jersey. In 1984 Larry moved over to Yale University as their assistant basketball coach. After taking an assistant basketball position at George Washington University, Larry became the head basketball coach as Clark University in Worcester Massachusetts. As an assistant coach at The United States Air Force Academy, Larry helped guide the team to the NCAA Tournament in 2004 and 2006, and concluded his last season with the Falcons in 2007 with a 26-9 record and a #1 seed in the National Invitation Tournament.
