Since 1965, the Reed Green Coliseum has been the home of the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles. At my last visit there in 1995, with my cousin who lives in the Hub City metro area, they had just put up what was then-state of the art scoreboards with the "Lite Brite" color message centers (Still love the Larry-Moe-Curly graphic).
However, I feel that either more renovations need to take place at Reed Green Coliseum (similar to what Georgia Tech did to the Alexander Memorial Coliseum, which is now named the McCamish Pavilion) along with the ones that were done in recent years like adding suites.
My suggestions would be these:
1. Replace all the bench seating with chairback seats.
2. Lower the floor so that a portable floor can be used and more seats can be added in that area.
3. New scoreboards with LED video screens like MSU and Ole Miss have (a four sided scoreboard suspended over the floor) with two auxiliary scoreboards at the ends. However, if the roof can't support the overhead scoreboard, then the current scoreboards should be replaced with LED video scoreboards.
Yet, I also wonder if the Reed Green Coliseum should be replaced with a newer and modern arena, either on the USM campus, by the Convention Center, or in the downtown area.
USM, you seem to have done more for the football and baseball venues (BTW, Hill Denson Field at Pete Taylor Park should have a new scoreboard with a video replay board) than you have for the basketball venue. Please, either update Reed Green Coliseum or build a new arena.
