Robinson Talks Commitment

The Rich keep on getting richer. The Southern Miss baseball program has been stock piling young talent, and a few days ago they landed the catcher of the future. talked with the Danville, IL product who gave us insight into why he chose the program, and his expectations for the future.

The Eagles have landed one of the best catching prospects in the nation. He is 6'2, 230, hits right handed with power, and was named all-state last year as a junior for the Danville Vikings.

A few days ago he made his commitment to Southern Miss.

"I called the coaches and told them Southern Miss is where I wanted to go to school," he said in an interview today with

"I talked with the coaches and decided to take a visit. I just loved the facilities, campus, and baseball program. I knew when I stepped off campus that I wanted to commit."

How was the connection made between Robinson and the Golden Eagles?

"Coach Calliet actually saw me at a tournament about two years ago in Ft. Myers," he said. "Coach Federico got a chance to see me play a few times this year, and he said he really liked me so we started e-mailing.

"After that, I went on my visit and that was the end of that."

Robinson brings many things to the table both offensively and defensively.

"My strength is probably my defense," he said. "I am pretty solid defensively I have a strong arm. Offensively, I can hit for power, and I think I can see myself hitting in the middle of the line-up at Southern Miss."

Robinson is mainly a catcher but he said he'll also spend time at either corner infield position.

He is being considered at the Major League level as well, as he is a prime prospect to go high in the draft. I asked Robinson if that was something he was considering.

"It is kind of a wait and see type of thing," he said. "I see myself going to college at Southern Miss and spending several years under some good coaching. Hopefully going into the draft my junior year I can have some higher stock.

"Right now I want to go to college and play for a good program.

"I didn't know a whole lot about Southern Miss before the coaches called me, but seeing the many things they had accomplished was so impressive. That got my attention and made me really want to go there."

For now, Robinson is focused on another big season, his final one for Danville High.

"I want to play up to my potential, play hard every game, and just do as well as I can to help my team," he said. "I haven't made any commitments for the summer, but that will be important as I prepare for my time at Southern Miss."

Robinson joins an already loaded class of 2013 for the Eagles as they continue to bring in top quality talent from throughout the nation.
