It didn't take Harris long to fall in love with everything he saw, and when he left he knew he had found the place he wanted to be his future home.
"I really had fun that weekend, I enjoyed the coaching staff so much," Harris told GoldenEaglePride.com.
"What I loved about Southern Miss is that there is a rich tradition of football. Coach Monken is turning around that program and I feel like he's found the right guys recruiting wise."
In Hattiesburg, Harris found just what he was looking for coming from the Atlanta area.
"Being somewhere where the community really cares and supports the team made a big difference," he said.
"I know the last two years have been rough but the community still supports the team and that really stood out to me."
His teammate Walden Davis also committed to the Eagles in the same weekend, and the two are excited about continuing their career together.
"We have been playing together for four years," he said.
"I moved from defensive end to linebacker. The chemistry on the field is really good between us. I don't have to worry about the secondary because I know he's back there.
"It was always something we talked about and I didn't think it was going to happen because he committed to Georgia State. Then Southern Miss impressed us both and we decided to make that decision."
Harris looks forward to the chance to contribute right away.
"I am being recruited to play middle linebacker," he added. "Coach Duggan said he thinks I can earn playing time this year depending on how I perform right away."
Harris was hosted by Golden Eagle running back George Payne.
