Southern Miss has named Jay Hopson as the man to take over for Todd Monken of the Golden Eagle program.
In a process that took just under a week, Southern Miss has nailed down a head coach to move forward.
Jay Hopson is a Vicksburg native and has incredible ties through the state of Mississippi due to his playing days at Ole Miss, and coaching gigs at Southern Miss. At USM, Hopson coached the DB's from '01-'03 and then was DC under Bower from '05-'07. He has had 4 years at Alcorn St where he has gone 32-17 and a pair of SWAC championships.
Alcorn State had five consecutive seasons with losing records until Hopson took over. After a 4-7 season, the Braves then went 9-3 in his next year.
His playing days were spent at Ole Miss, where he was a four year letterman playing defensive back and safety.
He has been an assistant coach at Tulane, Delta State, LSU, Florida, Michigan, Marshall, Memphis and Southern Miss. He has long ties to the south and plenty of connections.
Hopson must hit the ground running, more like sprinting, toward signing day which is just days away.
More to come on the new hire for Southern Miss...
