Marquez McNair has been the longest commit to Southern Miss, with his commitment having happened to Southern Miss last February.
In the waning days before signing day, there was some concern that McNair could be wavering because of his close relationship with Todd Monken, now departed to the NFL.
Fortunately, Southern Miss hired the right man who has already helped to keep him on board.
"I feel like with Coach Hop, we don't lose a step," McNair told GoldenEaglePride.com Sunday.
"He is probably the only guy that could replace a guy like Todd Monken."
McNair has a strong relationship with Coach Hopson, one that goes back to his days at Hinds when Coach would visit the school and talk to prospects. Also, Hopson had his cousin Fred McNair on staff with him there.
"He would stop by Hinds and always would talk to me," he said.
"He would tell me stories about my family all the time, I always enjoyed talking with him."
McNair, who will enroll in June at Southern Miss, said he's been working hard and is ready to go once he gets to USM.
"I just can't wait to get on campus," he said.
"I've been training with Shay Hodge since December and I feel great, the knee is in great shape too. I wish I could participate in spring practice, but it's all good I will learn from the sidelines."
