Keon Howard, QB, from Laurel, Mississippi will be staying close to home and attending Southern Miss next season. He will sign with the Golden Eagles tomorrow.
The three star quarterback was committed to Memphis before he took a visit to Southern Miss and Coach Monken. After that visit, he appeared to be down to a choice between the two schools.
The coaching change for Southern Miss, however, didn't hurt the Golden Eagle's chances for him. In fact, Coach Hopson hit the ground running and tonight Keon made the good news for USM public.
Former Golden Eagle Tracey Lampley now coaches the WR's for Laurel High School, and he talked about what USM will be getting in the talented QB after working so closely with him.
"First things first, Keon is a very humble, respectful guy who will bring a lot to the table," the former Golden Eagle star said.
"The thing about this is that its not just good for Keon, but its good for the entire area because if USM signs Keon then they will continue to make strides in Laurel where there is some real big time talent after him for years to come. It is a huge commitment for Southern Miss. He will do well there because he has a great work ethic."
On the field, Keon has tremendous arm strength and is a dual threat Quarterback.
"From my standpoint he has a very strong arm and he needs to work on some accuracy," he said. "He needs to learn ball placement, and he will get it. Every high school kid has things to work on and habits to break. At the next level, he'll learn that and he will iron those things out. The thing is that he has all the talent in the world and the hard work to go with it.
"He's so athletic he could play another position but he's set on Quarterback. He has so much passion for that position it's hard to see him play anywhere else."
Howard's commitment gives the Eagles their only high school quarterback commitment for the class of 2016. QB Griggs also committed and has signed.
