Demarrio Smith remains committed to Coach Hopson, he's just changing schools.
The 6'3, 275lb Defensive lineman from Canton, MS, committed to Southern Miss Tuesday night just before signing day on Wednesday.
Smith talked with GoldenEaglePride.com about how the late flip went down.
"Well I had committed to coach Hopson at Alcorn at first, but when he left and went to Southern Miss he called and offered me a scholarship to Southern Miss," Smith said.
"I had visited to campus before and I knew about Southern, and I thought it would be a good choice for me."
Coach Hopson has been recruiting the talented lineman, who is the type of sleeper prospect that doesn't go unnoticed by the new USM coach.
"Coach Hopson and I have and great relationship," he said.
"He recruited me hard he let me know how much he loved me and how much he cared about me. He always came by the house. And he just stressed how much he really wanted me."
Smith said they see him as playing either tackle or end along the defensive line.
"Both positions," he said.
"It depends on game situation. But my main position would be defensive end."
What are his plans for signing day?
"I'll be signing at school, but I'll also be going to the Mississippi sports hall of fame for their signing day," Smith informed us.
