Southern Miss is going to continue to make recruiting in-state a priority.
After loading up on in-state talent with the class of 2016, Coach Hopson will continue that trend by going after prospects from the class of 2017. He's already off and running with the offer to WR Jordan Murphy, and in the day after NSD two Brandon High School prospects have also picked up offers.
Rodney Hawkins, is a 6'2, 185lb play maker on both sides of the ball. Hawkins plays both WR and CB, and he's made a name for himself by being a tremendous punt and kickoff returner, too.
Schdarren Archie, 6'3, 180, is opposite Hawkins on defense at the CB position. He's another one with excellent speed and cover skills.
Both were offered by Southern Miss yesterday.
"Southern Miss is the first to offer me, and to be honest I could not stop smiling yesterday," Hawkins told GoldenEaglePride.com.
"I think it is a great program and a terrific school. I have heard they are upgrading a lot of things including the locker room and weight room. It is exciting to see what is going on down there."
Hawkins spoke with Coach Pollard who delivered him the good news. He said they spoke by phone but were going to meet face to face today.
Archie, who also is hearing from Ole Miss and Mississippi State, said that he picked up the good news yesterday too.
"They called and told me they liked me and wanted to offer me," he said.
"I'm in basketball season right now so I haven't been able to think much about it, but I'm excited."
Both players said they look forward to visiting Southern Miss this spring and talking with the staff about the good things going on in Hattiesburg.
