Southern Miss continues to be aggressive in the early recruiting of the class of 2017.
Travon Mathis is a talented defensive end from Lanett High School in Alabama who has just picked up an offer to the Golden Eagle program. He is being recruited by Coach John Wozniak, and the two have already started to build a strong relationship.
"Just from talking to him I can tell he's a great coach and a good guy, and when I picked up my offer he was just telling me congratulations and we really love your film," Mathis told GoldenEaglePride.com.
"He also said we really want to get you down on a visit, and it doesn't matter what day. He just want me to come and also stay in touch with him."
"I know Southern Miss has a good program and I just want to get down there and check it out for myself."
The 6'3, 250lb defensive end is very athletic and is currently playing basketball for Lanett.
Last season, he finished with 83 tackles with 16 for a loss. He also had 6 sacks for his school.
"We didn't make the playoffs but I felt like I had a real good season," he said. "I also had 96 pancake blocks along the offensive line."
Mathis currently holds several offers in addition to the one he picked up from Southern Miss.
"I have offers from university of Louisville, Samford university, Western Kentucky, and Georgia Tech," he said, while already having an idea of what he's looking for in a school at the next level.
"When it comes down to me making a choice it's going to be based on what college shows the most loyalty, and what college that will best fit me
