Will Wallace, 6'4 260lb TE/DE from Cathedral HS in Natchez, MS, took a visit to Southern Miss Saturday morning with his dad, and he left with a scholarship offer in hand.
His first offer came after spending the morning with new head Coach Jay Hopson, who left quite an impression on Wallace.
"I loved the time that I spent with Coach Hopson," Wallace told GoldenEaglePride.com.
"He is a great man and what I really loved about him is that he is interested in us being better people and not just football players. You can tell he wanted to see his players grow as people. We didn't just talk about football, we talked about school and what was going on in my life."
Wallace said he also enjoyed his visit and seeing the facilities.
"I've been to a few games, but it was nice to see the renovations coming to the locker rooms, they are impressive," he said. "I think they will be the best in the conference and I love what Southern Miss is doing."
Wallace also plays basketball where his team will be heading toward the playoffs soon.
"We lost a few of our guys to injuries but we'll be back full strength when the tournament comes," he said. "It is great for me to play just to keep in shape and work on my footwork."
With his athletic ability, Wallace is being looked at both offensively and defensively.
"Coach Hopson said he could see me at either tight end or defensive end," he said. "They are waiting to see needs and where I fit best."
He also said that first offer means a tremendous amount to him.
"It is just great to see that they were the first ones to take that chance on me and make that offer," he said. "To know I will be able to play at the next level is a great relief. I was so excited to pick up that first offer."
