Southern Miss head coach Jay Hopson talked about the importance of winning the in-state battles for prospects at the High School level.
They are certainly wasting no time getting in on talented prospects, and today they extended an offer to Grenada stand-out LB Javaris Russell.
The talented LB said he wasn't expecting the offer but is very glad to pick it up.
"I'm honestly not sure how they found out about me, I guess they saw some film on me and made an offer," Russell told GoldenEaglePride.com.
"I didn't get to talk to Coach Hop, but they talked to my coach and then sent me a message on twitter."
Russell said he hasn't visited Southern Miss, but is looking forward to in the spring.
"I am looking forward to coming down there," he said.
"I like the offer because it gives me an opportunity to play in-state."
His first offer was to Cal, but he said other than Southern Miss he's not hearing from many others yet. That certainly will change, but the good news is that the Eagles have gotten in early on the talented prospect.
