Southern Miss has been recruiting a lot in the state of Florida since Jay Hopson's staff came on board, and yesterday they pushed even farther away from Hattiesburg with an offer to Laurens (SC) offensive tackle Summie Carlay.
The 6'5, 280lb lineman let us know how the offer came about.
"I got a message from the offensive line coach who said they have been watching my film and were very impressed with what they saw from me," Carlay told GoldenEaglePride.com.
"I know they want me to go over there for Junior Day, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to make the trip."
Interestingly, Carlay has always known about the Southern Miss program.
"Yeah, I know a lot about them," he said. "I have family that lives in Louisiana and I travel there a lot. It would be fun to go there because I know my family would get to see me play."
"I also know they are a program that has turned things around and they have big expectations this year. I am very interested and look forward to taking a visit there."
Southern Miss is going to have to battle some local programs for the talented lineman though.
"I got an offer to South Carolina and Coastal Carolina," he said. "Then NC State offered me at their Junior Day.
"I'm a long way off from making a decision. What I love about the recruiting process is getting to visit all these great schools and get to know a lot of awesome people. Really, its a blessing."
For now, Carlay is hoping to add some more weight to his frame for his senior season.
"I'm hoping to get up to 290 during football work-outs," he said. "I'm on a special eating plan and I don't want to get to big where I can't move. But, I do want to prepare for the grind of the season in a big senior year for me."
